PenOfM's works are created from sustainable wool and natural fibres, specifically chosen for their empathetic connection to the subject matter, the environment, and for the therapeutic sensory properties they provide her as an artist.     The choice of fibre is based on its varying strength, length, texture and natural properties. Environmentally friendly dyed wool is also used to create a painterly effect on the surface's wider colour palette. Her works are created with a multidisciplinary approach, utilising a variety of ancient craft techniques associated with ceramics, fibre art, textiles, and soft sculpture.

Aspects of her work are focused on the complex relationship between humanity and the natural world. Through a considered exploration of the idea of 'symbiosis,' Pen observes and documents connections that exist between individuals and their surroundings. This exploration emphasises not only the surreal beauty of these interconnections but also the therapeutic potential they can hold, especially for those grappling with pain, loss and emotional distress.

The primary objective of my work is to explore and document transitional states that exemplify a cohesive integration of subject matter, environmental influences, and the materials utilised.

About

PenOfM studied Higher Diplomas in Fashion and Ceramics at Bradford College before graduating with a Fine Art Degree from the University of Derby in 1997.

After graduation, she dedicated over twenty years to working in art and mainstream education. She began as a ceramics tutor and technician at Harrogate College before transitioning to special educational needs (SEN/SEND) in primary and secondary schools. Later, she obtained counselling qualifications and a postgraduate qualification in Art Therapy and moved into the mental health sector.

In 2018, the effects of an injury left her living with chronic pain and illness. Pen returned to her art practice initially as a form of therapeutic engagement and means of escapism.

Pen is a strong advocate for the importance of craft skills, art, and the creative process in nurturing education, cultural understanding, and developing mental well-being. She continues to teach art and craft, freelancing for a Neurodiversity, Disability and Mental Health Charity.

In 2022, she began her professional career as an artist at The Great North Art Show at Ripon Cathedral and the Mercer Gallery in Harrogate.

Since then, she has exhibited in both England and Northern Ireland. Including twice with Craft NI's annual celebration of unique and contemporary art and craft in Northern Ireland. Other works have been on show at the Embroiderers' Guild, 'Home of Stitch and Textile Art', in London, Harrogate, and Birmingham. She is a member and has exhibited with the International Felt Association and Fibre Art Now, and has work held in a Private collection in Belfast.

In 2025, Pen was distinguished as one of ten finalists for the SCAF Emerging Artist Award, an accolade established by the Scotts Creative Foundation Trust, located in Thirsk, North Yorkshire.
